Costello, Howard...and Timor

On a local note...

On The Grand Leadership Challenge:

Ooh, the big story that's been percolating away in the background for years has burst all over the front pages. We're so excited. Completely out of the blue, at an entirely inopportune moment for all parties immediately involved.

It's made me, and the Australian media, and public, completely forget about how swiftly that oil deal with East Timor got sewn up - a day or two after the rejigged Timor leadership was installed.

Oh well.

A Note On Creationism*

The bulk of the Christian community in America have strongly supported the US military response to 9/11, and they remain among the strongest of supporters from what I can gather. I personally think a better response to 9/11 would have been to peacefully strengthen relations with the moderate Muslim world so that, by about now, or at least in the forseeable future, the moderate Muslim communities themselves would be doing the work of policing radical Islam. In fact I think this is the only solution to Islamic extremism.

The FBI doesn't list bin Laden as being wanted in relation to the 9/11 attacks - they haven't got enough evidence against him to enable the DoJ to formally indict and charge him. ( http://www.teamliberty.net/id267.html ). I'm sure the families of the dead in Afghanistan would be pleased to hear this.

Same story different details with Iraq. No WMD's - only a DSM (Downing Street Memo - see http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=20050624&articleId=500 ).

And check this out, just for the heck of it: http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=20060503&articleId=2374

It is now the case that the US military, as part of a new standard operating procedure, may use nuclear weapons in a conflict without outside consultation. No need to ask the President - or anybody else. If their use is warranted as determined by the particular demands of the particular operation, the field commander(s) involved may use them. Their use is in fact prescribed by the standard operating procedure. See http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=20060222&articleId=2032 . This scares me. If for some reason the situation gets out of hand in the Middle East re. Iran the world may be relying on a General failing to follow agreed-upon procedure if we are to avoid a nuclear conflict.

There are the Russians, who sell arms to Iran, and have a gentleman's agreement (or diplomatic posture perhaps) with Iran that they will not stand idly by if Iran is attacked. There are the Chinese, who are currently investing billions of dollars in oil infrastructure in Iran. And then there are the Israelis, who have a few hundred nuclear warheads of their own, and have indicated that they may be forced to act unilaterally to eliminate the Iranian nuclear threat (like they did with Iraq in 1980). The world is run by boys who think they are men, and the problem is, they really are playing with deadly toys.

What's this got to do with Christians in America? There are the actions of the Bush regime, and there is the support for the Bush regime. I think the actions of the Bush regime are putting us all at risk, and whilever American Christians provide crucial support for the Bush regime they are all-but directly responsible for putting us all at risk. You may or may not agree.

What's this got to do with thinking the world is 10000 years old and wanting it taught that way in schools? Well...depleted uranium has a half-life of 4.8 billion years - that's but one point with which we can begin to connect these two issues together.
